Tips from our team

A road trip in South Africa is high on the list for many travelers – and for good reason! Good to know: the seasons here are exactly reversed compared to those in Europe. As seasoned travelers, we can tell you that April/May (South African autumn) and October/November (South African spring) are the perfect times for your South Africa adventure.

Especially if you want to explore the iconic Garden Route. During these calm transition seasons, you'll enjoy pleasant temperatures between 20-28 degrees, minimal rainfall, and surprisingly few tourists.

It's no coincidence that we organize our South Africa Nomads trips during these months – you'll experience the country at its absolute best! Curious about what to expect in each season? Read on!

Climate in South Africa

South Africa is vast – really vast. And you can definitely feel that in the weather! During your road trip in South Africa, you'll drive through various climate zones. In Cape Town, the climate is Mediterranean, perfect for the world-famous vineyards and a refreshing dip in the ocean. If you head east along the Garden Route, the climate becomes increasingly subtropical. At Addo Elephant National Park, where you can drive among the elephants, it’s already much warmer and more humid than in Cape Town.

The South African spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to explore the country. The temperatures are perfect – not too hot for your road trip adventures – and it’s wonderfully quiet since the big tourist crowds haven’t started yet. Whether you’re whale watching in Hermanus or going on safari in Addo Elephant National Park – everything is just a bit more relaxed during these times.

The seasons in South Africa

In South Africa, the seasons are exactly the opposite of those in Europe. When we're in summer here, it's winter over there.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below you'll find frequently asked questions about the weather and climate in South Africa.

When is the rainy season in South Africa?

It varies by region! In Cape Town, most of the rain falls in winter (June-September). However, if you head east towards Addo, the rainy season shifts to summer (December-March). We run our trips outside of the rainy season, but of course, a little shower can always happen.

What is the best time for a safari in South Africa?

April/May and October/November are ideal. The weather is mild, and the animals are very active. In Addo Elephant National Park, you have the best chance of spotting (part of) the Big Five during this time. It's no coincidence that we organize our South Africa Nomads safari adventures then!

When is the best time to go whale watching in Hermanus?

From June to November, you can spot whales along the south coast. The Southern Right whales gather in the bay to mate and give birth during this time.

Is December a good time to travel to South Africa?

December is peak season with warm weather. Great for sunbathing in Cape Town or surfing in Jeffreys Bay, but expect higher prices and more crowds along the Garden Route. We recommend visiting during the quieter transitional seasons for the best experience.

Are there a lot of mosquitoes in South Africa?

During the dry transition seasons (April/May and October/November), you'll have the least trouble with mosquitoes. In the tropical east, it's a good idea to bring mosquito repellent, especially for the evenings.

What kind of clothing should I bring in the spring or autumn?

Light clothing for daytime, but also bring a warm sweater and long pants for the evenings. A rain jacket is handy for a local shower.

Can I swim in South Africa in spring and fall?

Yes! The ocean is great for a refreshing dip all year round. In Jeffreys Bay, it's actually the perfect time for surf lessons – the water is still pleasant, and the best surf spots are less crowded.

How is the traffic on the Garden Route during the quieter seasons?

In April/May and October/November, it's great for driving. You'll have most of the roads to yourself, especially during the week. Parking at attractions is easy, and you can be more spontaneous without having to make reservations everywhere.
